She is Zooey Deschanel, impossibly doe-eyed indie-film ingĂ©nue; he (or “him” in the duo’s grammatically challenged parlance) is M. Ward, low-key indie troubadour. But Deschanel is more than just a pretty media-grabber: Interestingly, she wrote most of the music on their debut, “Volume One,” based on a trove of demos she’d been sitting on. Buoyed by Deschanel’s sweet, clear voice and backed by Ward’s impeccable arrangements, the songs have a classic retro appeal spiffed up with a modern sheen.

I’ve added live photos from that show taken by Ryan Muir and Dese’Rae L. Stage.
She & Him performed at NYU on April 23rd, pictures have been added to the gallery.

I have seen “Elf” a number of times (yes I have a mild obsession with Will Ferrell) and every time I saw it, I found myself mesmerized by indie darling Zooey Deschanel’s powerful voice and wondering if it was actually her singing (which seems to be more the exception than the rule these days).
Any lingering doubts I had were erased on Tuesday night when I had the pleasure of seeing a live performance of She & Him, the duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward.
While the Monday night performance was cancelled due to Zooey suffering from an awful bout of laryngitis, She & Him rose to the occasion on Tuesday, rescheduling the concert to a larger venue to accomodate both nights of ticket holders.
And disappoint, they did not. This dynamic duo played an incredible set AND gave an encore!

Don’t miss Zooey on The Simpsons this Sunday on FOX. She’ll be lending her voice to Mary in the episode “Apocalypse Cow”, you can read the episode’s summary below.
Bart joins the 4-H club and falls in love with a cow named Lou, but when he finds out that Lou is destined for the slaughterhouse Bart gives the cow to Mary, a fellow 4-H member, and her father mistakes the cow for a dowry. Homer and Marge come to the rescue to try and free Bart from his marriage agreement.
Zooey and M.Ward performed “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” with their friends Yo La Tengo on Conan yesterday. Zooey had lost her voice, as previously announced, and still managed to pull it off splendidly.
Wejusthitaboat has put the video up on youtube, to watch it, click on the player.
I’ve added two MQ photoshoots to the gallery. The first are the outtakes of Dazed And Confused shoot taken by Terry Richardson in 2006. The second was taken by Paul Jasmin for the march edition of GQ Magazine featuring Zooey and M. Ward.
